Already over-using the BlackBerry
I’ve been lucky enough to kick off 2009 with a new laptop (and therefore, hopefully more blogging) and a new BlackBerry.
It’s so weird to be able to check Facebook, knoxnews or Twitter from my phone. Prior to this, I had no data plan and used my third version of a 3-year-old phone, after losing and damaging two others in 2008. Needless to say, I’m that person that needs to insure things.
And my previous laptop was going on 6 years old. I’m not hard on computers at all, but after 5 years, it was time.
So what have I learned/enjoyed/hated/endured most with this technical 360 in my life? My hands hurt. Bad! It can’t already be the sign of BlackBerry over-use after one week, can it?

No worries! You’re dealing with what I experienced as well: The learning curve (in my case, on my time-tested Blackberry Curve)! It took so very long for me to convert my address book (spread across different formats and devices; some exportable, some not), my calendar (hard copy pre-’Berry), and to modify various settings and software applications. But fear not. Once it was done, I’ve been good to go and loving my phone.
You may actually be more acquainted with this than you know, even more than I am. I’m savagely resisting taking the Facebook plunge, fearing it will suck my time (though my demographic, 20-somethings, seems collectively with it), and more crucially, because I fear that first bit of account setup. The friend-ing, the settings, the extras I hear about on Facebook - to get through that period would be nice, I hear, because then it becomes a useful networking tool that only does as much as you want it to do. Facebook is the plunge I’ve avoided because of initial setup; unlike me, you’ve taken your setup plunge. Persevere, and you will sing the joys of the Blackberry. Of this I’m sure. Cheers!
Don’t be daunted by the Facebook set-up. It’s only as complicated as you make it or need it to be. I have different types of privacy settings created, depending on the types of content I want to share with my contacts. It’s the most complicated part of Facebook, but a cool feature that allows for tons of customization.
It’s funny you bring it up because I was going to blog about that later tonight.
I’ve got a Curve too and really do love it. The strange thing is I’ve been sucked into Brick Breaker (I’m not even a video game fan) and that’s where I’ve noticed the hand pain. I’ve been trying to cut back …
VERY good to know! This may inspire me to get the setup done sooner rather than later……and have an excuse to actually use the Facebook feature on my Curve too, rather than letting the icon keep staring me down, taunting me with its little blue-and-white F.
I’m glad you’ve got a Curve, Lauren! You may be way ahead of me, but as much as I loved it before, there’s a mighty substantial firmware update out there. Mine was available on my provider’s website (my wife and I are with T-Mobile), so there should be one out there for whichever company you’re with. Again, you may have already anticipated this, but with this little update, my Curve gained the ability to record video, improved the email format and layout, and just became more stable, lacking even periodic restarts. Oh, and Brickbreaker stayed, undisturbed by the update.:) Highly recommended!
